PurTest® Arsenic Water Test Kit

Arsenic sometimes occurs naturally in water and can be found in public and private water supplies.  Arsenic is a semi-metal element in the periodic table. It is odorless and tasteless. It enters drinking water supplies from natural deposits in the earth or from agricultural and industrial practices.  It is a poison that can pose a health risk for people and animals.  Arsenic contamination of water can result from mining operations, semiconductor manufacturing, use of wood preservers, and pesticide application. Arsenic is often found in ground water or mineral water at levels over 100 times the safe drinking water limits as established by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  Arsenic has been linked to lung and skin cancer, and in some cases, to death.  Non-cancer effects can include thickening and discoloration of the skin, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting; diarrhea; numbness in hands and feet; partial paralysis; and blindness. Arsenic has been linked to cancer of the bladder, lungs, skin, kidney, nasal passages, liver, and prostate.  Consequently, anyone who has a private well should test their water for arsenic at least annually.  The World Health Organization safe standard for arsenic is 10 parts per billion (ppb).

The EPA has set the arsenic standard for drinking water at .010 parts per million (10 parts per billion) to protect consumers served by public water systems from the effects of long-term, chronic exposure to arsenic. Water systems must comply with this standard by January 23, 2006, providing additional protection to an estimated 13 million Americans.

The PurTest® Arsenic Water Test Kit provides a convenient method of screening water for arsenic.  This do-it-yourself EPA-based method detects Arsenic levels as low as 10 parts per billion (ppb).  Results are in 10 minutes.  This test is presumptive and therefore is not intended to replace quantitative testing.  If you detect arsenic, verification of test results should be done by retesting. No guarantees are intended or implied by the test.

Instructions for Use

  1. Remove cap and contents from PurTest® bottle, rinse bottle, then fill with water to be tested up to the line (50 ml) on the bottle. Do not touch the reaction filter in the cap. The reaction filter contains mercury.
Set cap aside and keep it dry so as not to damage reaction filter.
  2. Add contents of Arseni-cator 1™ (blue capped vial) to water sample.
  3. Add contents of Arseni-cator 2™ to water sample. IMMEDIATELY, recap the bottle and secure cap tightly. BE CAREFUL NOT TO BREATHE ANY GASES BEING CREATED.
  4. VERY GENTLY SWIRL (DO NOT SHAKE) the solution in the bottle 7 times to mix. The reaction filter must NOT get wet, therefore be careful not to cause any water to splash inside the bottle.
  5. Set bottle aside at room temperature undisturbed for 30 minutes allowing the reaction filter to absorb any arsenic gases.
  6. After 30 minutes, remove cap, pour solution after uncapping in toilet, wash hands thoroughly. Compare color inside cap to chart below with 2 hours of performing test to determine results. Colors will begin to fade after 2 hours. Do not touch reaction filter. FOR BEST INTERPRETATION, COMPARE COLOR ON INSIDE OF CAP TO CHART BELOW IN BRIGHT LIGHT. Verification of test results can done by retesting or using a lab. Note: If a brown or yellowish-brown color appears on the reaction filter inside the cap, arsenic levels above 50 ppb are detected.
